Effective Steps to Overcome Frustration

Have you noticed that when you get frustrated you are wound up and feel drained? The reason is that frustration sucks your energy, distracts you, and steals your time.

However, it is possible for frustration to be positive because it can give you a different perspective on things. Furthermore, it can give you the power to keep going until you reach your goal.

Remember though that when you get stuck in a rut and your frustration makes you angry, dulls your mind, and causes the day to slip by, it is time to take some steps. These steps can help you turn your state of mind and day around. It can help turn it into an improved thing, into something that is more beneficial as well as into something that will restore your feeling of well-being.

So, where do you start?

  1. Be present now - when feeling frustrated one tends to be somewhere in the future in your mind, normally it is somewhere you wish you can be. At other times it could be that you are reliving past failures or stumbling blocks. When this happens, snap out of it by calming down and placing your focus and attention on the here and now. You might say, yes but how. You can do this by focusing on your breathing and focusing on what is around you.

  2. Be grateful for what you do have - when you have pulled your attention back to where it can be most beneficial it is time to focus on all the positives in your life. The quickest way to accomplish this is to appreciate what you actually do have. There is so much to be grateful for. For example, i) having a house and roof over your head, ii) having drinkable water, iii) not having to live with an empty stomach, iv) having friends and family.

  3. Concentrate on the immediate things you can do - once your attention is on the here and now and you have a more grateful and positive frame of mind the moment has arrived to do something productive with your frustrations. Ask yourself, what can I do at this moment to make things better? It could be learning what actually frustrates you thereby showing you that you should take a different approach to achieve your goal. It could be that you need to try one more time and just keep going, no matter how many times you have failed before. It could even be that you come to the realisation that you have taken on too much or that life has become complicated and difficult resulting in the fact that it is time to take a break and take care of yourself. This will help recharge you so that you can move forward in achieving what you want in life.

Other ways to prevent or reduce your frustration are:

  1. Find out what your triggers are and see what you can do about them.

  2. Remember, you are human just like everyone else.

  3. Talk about it, don't keep it bottled up.

  4. Communicate as directly as possible.

Don't allow frustration to rob you of a bright future.
