GET REST

Over the last couple of days, we have looked at some self-care practices to apply in order for us to fulfill our God-given purpose. Today we will be looking at getting rest.

Let's start off with a very encouraging scripture - Matthew 11:28, Jesus said, "Come to Me, all who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.

Once again we will use Elijah as an example because his life teaches us that when we forget to rest the wheels come off and it shows us that life is a marathon, not a sprint. I read that the Khoisan people can move 8-10 hours a day for many days but they also know when to rest. Their motto is that because they move for so many days at a fast pace they need to take a break so that their souls can catch up to their bodies. So what can we learn from this? We need to regularly and rhythmically interrupt our work by resting in order for OUR souls to catch up with our daily life.

For the sake of your soul, you should limit your work hours, there should be clear lines between working and non-working hours. How do you do this? Let's look at 3 ways it can be done.

  1. Divert daily - for example, set a time that you put your phone on airplane mode for at least an hour. Preferably first thing in the morning so that you can start your day on a positive note which will help your body and mind to be in a positive state. You can use this time to meditate, exercise or even read an uplifting book. It's important for you to set the tone for the rest of your day. Moreover, have a clear cutoff time for when your working day will end in order for you to be able to spend quality time with your family. It is not possible or wise for you to push yourself hard all day every day. It is vital to have balance but this takes timing. For example, sleep fully so that you can work wholeheartedly. Focus deeply then relax completely. Always give each phase of your life your full attention.

  2. Withdraw weekly - when you take a 24-hour period once a week and rest completely from your work, take the time to reflect on your life, and to re-envision the week that is lying ahead you can use the opportunity to live your deepest values and sense of purpose.

  3. Abandon annually - It is vital to guard your annual leave. During your annual leave, it is not necessary to fill every day with activities, etc because it will exhaust you just as much as overworking. Take this time to slow down during this time so that you can make space to deeply recharge your emotional battery, reconnect with loved ones and rethink your life.
