Reaching Your Goals

Setting goals is not about making a New Year's resolution that frizzles out quickly. Nor is it a once-off thing you do. It is about taking a good look at yourself and making a firm commitment to your goals. Make sure that these goals are realistic and attainable. They need to be specific and attainable.

Now the question is - how do I reach my goals? Here are a couple of suggestions:

  1. Start with a cue-based plan - give yourself a time limit as to when you would like to achieve your goal. Detail it and follow through on it.

  2. Make pursuing your goals fun - by striving for efficiency when trying to achieve your goals you can be left high and dry because you are neglecting the part that should bring you joy in achieving your goals.

  3. Make room for emergencies - a stretched goal will keep you motivated but it is good to have the ability to declare an "emergency" instead of giving up on your goal. This will help you push forward after a misstep.

  4. Take into consideration a penalty clause - in other words, set up a penalty for yourself if you do not achieve your goals. This can work wonders. Make sure to pick something that will motivate you to rather reach your goal than give up on it.

  5. Ask your friends to help you - surround yourself with people who inspire you, boost your performance, and encourage you to reach your goal. Learn from the best.
